So right away in this you address one of my biggest questions, one of the time on the highway w/ other folks. The 6th gear and someone said a 15tooth gear would give you all you need for the roads(70mph). I estimate now that I'll be an 80% - 20% rider of the roads, then trails? So the extra weight of the Rally along w/ proper suspension/tires, ect ect is the way to go. But you've done a whole grocery list from levels 1-3 >> > It just lets me know what IS possible. "Priceless" Nah, but at least I know. I love the linear approach. visualizing it for us ! peace

WoW, the intent for any bike is such a personal thing from money & down the line from there. I've only recently discovered this version of the 300 by Honda but it's got a few things I like but honestly I am particular to Yamaha....maybe b/c it's blue but no matter, this bike has most the things stock that I want. As I save my money, I have a list of 7 dual sport bikes that I've done like this one in getting ALL the info I can about pro's/con's, all the possible upgrades I want/need, and how feasible it'll be for me to do them. My reasoning runs kinda parallel to yours but you've actually explained it verbally & visually which very few people do. Like I said, I just found the Rally model while looking at prices locally & KUDO's for the rear gas tank. I'd never heard of that "mod" & now I'll find your video to add all of this into my Dual Sport list & breakdowns. You've done a pretty good job of how you've laid out this info.... it's powerful in my opinion but I'm not moved by the guys who buy bike after bike to mod them for a channel. Some are great but I feel you sincere blood, sweat, & even some tears in this deal. Thanks for that.... you ought to have more subb's. peace mate

Now that I've found you, I'll be looking at a bunch more videos to see things I have missed. I briefly looked at your channel but didn't see the "Rear Gas Tank" install or info but I'll go look again. That is an interesting add-on & this bike already had a little bit larger gas tank than others in my lists. I'm a Texan so there's plenty of places to ride. I want to get the most for my money since I can't work any longer it's harder to come buy. Thanks for all the help. peace

@@user-dv7hb2sc9m So happy to have you as I subscriber. I didn't do a video of that rear tank installation as there was a lot of fabricating new brackets to make it fit. Camel ADV now does a similar rear tank for the CRF300.

@@ShonkyProductions >> yeah, I'll look it up since you shared it was possible. This type of issue is why I mentioned the feasibility of things I might do down the road. Making my own brackets would make it less feasible at this point of my life since I own very few tools now. I was a Heating/Air Conditioning Tech so I did own a lot of tools/meters but they are gone. But the way you laid all of this out was appealing to say the least. It's why I posted as I did b/c I waste a lot of time trying to get at info where the Channel doesn't have your skillsets at video or conversing on the subject.... you are a better all around guy, there's few of ppl like you so I thank you again & I'll be asking other questions. peace

I actually asked someone else IF they think it might be wise upon buying this bike new = that you pull all the plastics, wrap em' up & store then, then buying a set of plastics to use in everyday use? I've seen this on more expensive Plastic's but I couldn't help but wonder if that might be wise on this bike as well? I'm gonna watch this & perhaps you can tell me your thoughts on what I'm asking? Don't worry too much about it. Put some lower crash bars on and just enjoy it. Dirt bikes get dropped and scratched, it's no big deal. The plastics hold up pretty well. I've been abusing mine for a few years and except for that big crash, they have held up well.

Yeah. They got me too. I almost bought a used GS1200, but settled for a 2012 650 Vstrom ($5300). The vstrom was not the off-road adventure machine i thought it would be, but the fun-to-ride perfect touring/commuter it became. I'm learning off-road stuff with a 300L. It goes everywhere the vstrom can't. There is no unicorn motorcycle so be prepared for at least 2 bikes in the driveway. It's ironic that the more I ride the 300L off-road, the better I am off-road with the vstrom.

I think if you buy a BMW 1250gs and think you are going to be able to ride off road - you're probably dreamin. However on an unsealed road and a couple of creek crossings - no problem. I live in Sydney - takes me close to 2hrs ride to even get to a dirt road!!! Australia is a big place so a 300cc bike won't do it as a tourer - usually need a couple of day so I have to have luggage! So an adventure touring bike is great for me - that's what I want - great for touring the dirt roads. Really I think - dirt touring go big - off road go small and buy a trailer. Not sure what you do with the mid size adventure bikes???

I've never understood the appeal of huge heavy powerful bikes, especially for adventure. The biggest and most powerful bike i had was V-Strom 650, brand new. It was a perfect touring bike, and i took it lightly off road. But i was so scared to scratch it, i barely went off road. Then i sold it, and got a 1996 1 cylinder BMW F650 which i dropped all the time and flung around with 40hp. Guess which bike i had more fun on and did more adventure on. I always laugh when i see these BMW GS1200 dudes with every single OEM BMW accessorie, shirt, helmet, boots, etc that money can buy. With perfectly polished prestine $50k bikes that will never see a spec of dust in their life.

Could not agree more. I bought the SA-R in 2017. Took it out on a singlr track a few months later. I nicknamed that day the 'trail of tears". After that i took it on long hauls and was able to take some dirt and forgotten roads on the Rockies. It handled that great. It was comfortable, powerful and agile. Put 48k on it until i traded it in last week for S1000XR. I realized i missed the gearing and geometry of a sport tourer. Big adventure bikes are probably the best jack of all trades bikes you can find. Marketing jerks are what they are. The bikes are great though for what they offer. If i eber choose to go back on gnarly back country trecks it will be on a 390. For now my XR can handle dirt and unmaintained roads just fine and its a hoot on the black top!

Does 95% of what I need, but I fell into a group of very experienced adventure riders and occasionally we end up in absolutely crazy off road situations, that we rarely know is coming. One of them sold me their Suzuki VStrom 250 SX. I ride it 95% of the time now and it can do *almost everything the bigger bikes can do. Skill and judgement does the rest. As mentioned, if you really play hard, you have to be able to pick the bike up. I can always do that. Soo glad I didn’t get a bigger bike. Great vid.

I don't usually comment. I just read xD. Been motorcycling since 17, that was 23 years ago. Tried different bikes of different sizes and weights (I'm just a casual rider). I'm on my CRF 300 Rally for three months now. I very seldom use my other bikes anymore, neither the lower CCs (125) nor the bigger ones (650 to 1250). I find the CRF 300 Rally well balanced. Just like what you have said, "I can go anywhere", as it is more agile, versatile and easier to operate. I've seen videos of some people doing cross countries just by using dirt bikes, like the KTM 500 exc, e.g. rtwPaul of MOTOREK. Many can master heavier bikes to tackle more challenging/technical roads, and yet still challenging to do so most of the time. As a casual motorist like me, I don't have to do that on the 300 Rally. However, and finally, to each his own. Happy and safe riding to all :) Edit: But I'm itching to try and find out how the new BMW F900 Enduro performs or feels on different types of roads. xD

You seem to have overlooked the point that adventure bikes need to be exciting on the highway too , and many ride two up. 36 hp isn't doing that. Do you NEED 150 hp? Of course not, but it's fun as hell on the highway, but of course, it needs to be toned down in the dirt. You can use any bike to do anything. Any bike can be an "adventure bike". Honestly, I don't see anyone trying single-track, technical stuff on the big adv bikes. In the Triumph manual, it says "for light off roading." The marketing people may be overselling them, but I think that most people that actually own them are happy with what the bike is technically capable of, even though they may not have the ability to use it to its potential. This is also true in the automotive world.

So they need to be fun on pavement too. Yes they suck at deep sand, and technical single track, but the average rider can go pretty far off road and is able to pick it up by themselves. Get the experience first then youll know what you need. Adv is designed for long road and semi offroad. A line between a cruiser and a dirt bike. But dont have the full luxury of either bike.
